Step 1: SALT
Cutting down on the salt is the first step. Not cutting OUT, just down. There’s a lot of ways you can do this and most of them aren’t too painful. Think salt-free fries or pretzels, Mrs. Dash seasoning spice blends instead of the Lawry’s or Goya Adobo, and no adding extra to your food.
Step 2: SUGAR
Some of us love the salt. Some of us can’t say no to the sweets. Doesn’t matter which you fall into, we’ve got to be good about it all. Once you get the hang of the salt, cut back on the sweets in your life for step 2. Same principle, now with the sugar.
Step 3: ADD A VEGETABLE
It’s safe to say that most of us don’t get enough fiber. Actually, it’s a fact. The recommendation is 25-38g of everyday. Most of us get around 15g a day – on a GOOD day. Adding a vegetable to your day will help you get so much closer to the fiber goal. Need some ideas?
Step 4: ADD A FRUIT
You got the veggies into your day, now throw a fruit in there. Frozen, fresh, whatever. Just as long as it’s a whole fresh fruit and not something that comes in a pie or can or bottle and labeled juice. You want all the fiber and antioxidants that come with the real thing.
Step 5: ADD ANOTHER VEG
I know I know. Again with the veggies. But guys, it’s important. It’s not just about the fiber. It’s also about the phytonutrients, anti-inflammatories, vitamins and minerals you get when you eat veg. No ones talking about becoming a vegetarian. Just a second vegetable to your day. It won’t kill you. But it will make you healthy.
Step 6: WATER
Now that you’ve cut down on the salt and sugar, added a bunch of vegetables and tossed in a daily fruit, you’re almost done. Last is water. Goal is to drink about 1.5L of water a day, or about 8 cups. A glass in the morning, one 30 minutes before every meal, and then another after you eat should do the trick.
Step 7: REVIEW + PLAN (for tomorrow)
Now that you’ve gotten all the steps down, the last thing to do is make sure you’re ready to keep going. Take a look at how you did with all these steps, and think about what you slipped on. Make the harder parts a priority to practice tomorrow, and challenge yourself to find a few new ways to do the things that were a little easier.
That’s it. Simple, but maybe not easy.
